Q: What age can I start?

The youngest age is 5yr old but it will depend on the child’s physical and cognitive development. Ideally school age children both girls and boys from 7yrs and older right up to adults can participate in fencing. As long as you have the passion and hard work ethic then really age is not a barrier.

Q: Is fencing dangerous?

Fencing is the safest sports, fencer are wearing the proper safety equipment and following the correct safety protocols, the risk of injury will be greatly reduced.

Q: Which weapon do I choose and can I choose more than one?

Most competitive fencers choose to specialize in one weapon only. However, we encourage students to pickup more than one weapon. The choice of weapon may be depend on a few things from personal choice, style or your particular strengths and weaknesses, so there really is not one determining factor.

Q: Is the Hills Athletic Club a registered club?

The Hills Athletic Club is certainly a registered club. https://www.hillsathleticfencing.com.au/

We are registered with the NSW Fencing Association and regularly compete in

State level competitions.

Q: Do you offer any trial classes?

Yes, Trial class is a 30 mins one on one individual lesson to get you started in fencing, the cost for trial class is $35.

Q: Do I need my own fencing equipment and what should I bring to the class?

All equipment and uniforms are provided by the club for beginners and new members only for the first 3 months of membership. After which you will be required to purchase your own equipment or pay a $10 hire fee each time you use the club equipment. We recommend that you purchase your own equipment and uniform can be purchased through the club) if you are planning to participate long term and/or are competing on a competitive level. Please ensure you wear light comfortable clothing, closed shoes and bring drink bottle and a towel to each class.

Q: How long is the class and what is involved?

Each class runs for 30-60 mins duration and depending on the particular class, the activities may vary but will include one or more of the following; warm-up and stretches, footwork exercises, sword work, fencing related games and activities and bouting session.

Q: What is cancellation policy?

The Hills Athletic Fencing Club will require 30 days notice in writing of cancellation of membership. During this 30 days, you can still come to training, Tuition fees are non-refundable, non- transferrable or used to offset future membership costs due to non-attendance.

Q:  What if my child is sick or cannot make a class? Do you offer make-up classes?

If your child misses their class due to illness, please let us know ASAP so we can help arrange a make-up class at any of our venues. If you do not notify us, we will mark it down as a non-attendance and a make-up class will not be offered. If your child attended the class but did not manage to complete the class for whatever reason, then no make-up class will be offered. Members are only entitled to 2 make-up classes per school term (10 week) which are to be taken before the end of the current term.

Q: What if I am away on holidays? Will I still get charged?

We understand that from time to time you will plan to go away on holidays. We will require 7 days notice of the period you will be absent from class. During this time, your membership will be not charged .You can suspend for a minimum of 7 days and a maximum of 28 days. All you have to do is give us a minimum of 7 days notice. You can still train up until the date of your suspension takes effect.
